Miniature Photography with Tomica Cars

With the Movement Control Order (MCO) ongoing, there are many limitations to what we can shoot daily. Like architecture, sports or even events. Thus, I started looking indoors on what I can use as my subject to shoot. I found a few Tomica toy cars I bought as a souvenirs when I was in Japan.

First, I started visualising on what settings looks best for each Tomica car. I started sketching it to check what material would be needed for the shoot.

I imagine it is a 4-wheel drive and able to run on different terrain. Maybe with some rock beneath the wheels, with heavy jungle setting in the back. Plus, the doors of the toy car is able to open. Therefore I decided to add some drama to it, using a sprayer to create a rainy back drop.

Finding a rough terrain
Setting up background with stones and leaves
Finding the best angle
Sprayer to create rainy backdrop
Constantly trying
Colour editing on Lightroom

And here’s my best shot

Nissan X-trail Fire Chief Car rushing to scene

Nissan X-trail Fire Chief Car suites more to an urban backdrop. With this in mind, I designed it to be rushing to a scene in a highway road. To add more action to it, I try to capture some water splash. P.s. it rained a while earlier so I decided to use that rainy backdrop.

Finding a wet spot to place it
Using some rocks from the garden to build the rocky backdrop
And started spraying
Splashing
I mean, a lot of splashing

Final result.

Hummer H2 on the road in a winter night

My dream car is a Hummer and that is why I bought it at the first place. I wanted a really cool look for this car. Finally, I decided on using some lighting to give it a dystopian feel. By using my phone and laptop, I looked up for some full colour images and turn up the brightness.

First try on colour lighting
Using salt as snow
Adding other subjects
Replacing watch with mountains
Behind the scenes
Of course, colour editing
